Abstract: When the staff, the management, and the trustees of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art decided to expand their facility, the goal was much more than just additional space. The desire was for the museum to physically open itself up to the surrounding community, but for this to happen the building had to be shut down for roughly three years.
