Abstract: Complicated by the proximity of numerous existing structures and a high groundwater table, a deep excavation for a new research center on the campus of the University of Chicago relied on a diaphragm wall for the earth retention system and permanent foundation wall. Tiebacks and internal bracing were among the techniques required to support the excavation, while micropiles, tie-downs, and jet grouting were used to underpin adjacent university buildings.
