Abstract:

The replacement for the bridge in Illinois that carries Interstate 270 over the Chain of Rocks Canal was designed around myriad challenges, from avoiding a nearby levee to withstanding seismic loads and barge hits. The sleek and efficient crossing, which is one of the largest steel plate I-girder bridges in Illinois, keeps traffic moving without blocking maritime vessels on the mighty Mississippi.
