Part of: Recommended Practice for Fiber-Reinforced Polymer Products for Overhead Utility Line Structures

Abstract:

The user is responsible for ensuring the quality of products purchased. Therefore, the user of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) products determines the level of quality that will be accepted. Specifications covering required performance and quality characteristics of the product to be purchased should be developed and provided to bidders with the request for bids. Manufacturing processes, methods, and materials differ from vendor to vendor. Therefore, before fabrication, the user should determine whether the manufacturer has quality control programs and standards in place (e.g., ISO 9001) that will ensure consistency in the level of quality required. Accordingly, the user should obtain and review the manufacturer's quality assurance program documentation. The user may also consider a site inspection of the manufacturer's facilities as part of a complete vendor approval program. This chapter will assist users in preparing specifications that include a quality control program.
