Abstract: The past decade has seen the proliferation of many alternative thermoplastic pipeline products and materials that continue to gain market share. The diversity of these products and their complex behavior has given rise to new standards and specifications, largely developed by the manufacturers themselves. Despite widespread acceptance, industry understanding of the mechanics of reinforced and composite thermoplastic materials is still limited compared to that of more traditional materials such as steel and concrete. As one of the newest entrants to the pipeline technology stage, thermoplastic composites offer solutions to some of the current problems faced by traditional construction materials, as well as superior performance over current technology offerings. With the development of a body of industry knowledge and further understanding of the behavior and benefits of these materials, thermoplastic composites have the capacity to change the face of the pipeline industry.
