Abstract:

The purpose of Professional Practice of Foundation Engineering is to describe the types of services provided to clients by Consulting Engineers who practice soil mechanics and foundation engineering, to outline the ways in which they are compensated, and to provide guidelines for the procurement of soil mechanics and foundation engineering services. Much of the content of this document is devoted, therefore, to discussion of problems introduced into the Owner-Client-Consultant relationship by supplementary and cognate services peculiar to foundation engineering practice. Topics include relationship to other engineers and parties, types of foundation engineering services, types of business organizations, selection of a foundation consultant and contractual negotiations, scope of service and fees, supplemental services and charges.
