Abstract:

This publication attempts to include papers that are representative of Nathan M. Newmark's many outstanding contributions to civil engineering and to include his most heavily referenced papers. These papers serve to illustrate his penetrating insight into techniques for approaching difficult engineering problems and his lasting demonstration of the value of sound engineering judgment. They also illustrate the profound influence that Prof. Newmark has had on the practice of civil engineering. Topics include the strength of thin cylindrical shells as columns, simplified computation of vertical pressures in elastic foundations, and a distribution procedure for the analysis of slabs continuous over flexible beams.

Subject Headings: Seismic design | Building design | Elastic analysis | Foundation design | Elastic foundations | Soil analysis | Dynamic structural analysis | Mexico City | Mexico
