Abstract: The equations of equilibrium for a deformed element of a sandwich shell with a weak cord and similar membrane facings are derived and compared with corresponding equations for a Cosserat surface. The two sets of equations are identical in form which permits a physical interpretation of those concepts which are special to a Cosserat surface theory. Upon specialization, the equations derived are shown to be in agreement with previous results for sandwich shells.
