Abstract: Some basic concepts for the construction of a generalized simulation model of a container terminal are developed. The model is intended as a design tool. A terminology is developed for describing the different types of container terminal which defines the terminal in two ways: first, by type of interface; second, by type of equipment used. An analysis on the use of simulation on this type of design problem is given with particular emphasis on the pitfalls. The form of a simulation model of a generalized container terminal is given. The specific model is not considered.
