Abstract:

Two pilot projects for bored tunneling in soft soil have been undertaken in the Netherlands under the authority of the Centre for Underground Construction: the Second Heinenoord Tunnel and the Botlek Rail Tunnel. Experience gained from monitoring the Heinenoord project was applied during development of the Botlek project. The monitoring information with respect to the deformation and stresses in the tunnel lining of the Second Heinenoord Tunnel was analyzed and evaluated using two-dimensional and three-dimensional finite element analysis. An inventory of unfavorable deformations and damage to the lining of the Heinenoord Tunnel led to the development of a stochastic model relating to the assembly of lining segments in a ring to deformations and stresses.
