Abstract:

Papers presented at the ASCE's First International Conference on Urban Public Transportation Systems held in Miami, Florida, during March 21-25, 1999, are included in this proceedings. Transportation professionals from 25 large international cities presented papers on 1) socioeconomic characteristics, land use, and travel patterns; 2) existing urban transportation system, its operation and use by the people; and 3) a topic of their choice pertaining to their city's public transit system. In addition to formal paper presentations on each city, proceedings also include the summaries of urban transportation experts who participated in three panel discussions: future of public transportation, innovative financing in urban transportation, and innovative techniques and transit technologies.
