Abstract:

This paper describes the current situation of the public transport system in the city of Sa˜o Paulo, Brazil, and its metropolitan area, with emphasis on current developments. A concise evaluation follows, upon which some critical issues, requiring further consideration, are highlighted. In conclusion, an overview is presented of a novel medium-capacity mode currently under development by SPTrans, the local public transit management agency.
