Abstract:

Since 1994 the Puerto Rico Department of Transportation and Public Works has collaborated with the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in an innovative leadership and professional development program. The goal of the program is to develop the technical professional human resources required for planning, designing, building, operating and maintaining an urban rail system. Graduate and undergraduate students from UPR & MIT are selected to participate in two special short courses, work internships, a visit to a transit system and assisted research. Upon graduation the students are given priority for available positions with project consultants and contractors.
