Abstract:

The Committee on Specifications of the Construction Division of ASCE has developed a guide to preparing construction specifications for design-bid build projects. The guide contains preparation of writing, formatting, and issuance of contract documents. The guide contains typical wording problems, definitions, use of codes and standards, and a sample specification. Procedures are discussed for interacting with the client and the engineer. Disputes are discussed with recommendations for better wording that will reduce claims. The report was developed by committee members who specialize in preparation of contract documents. It has been developed through questionnaires, papers, articles, and symposia during the last ten years of the committee's existence.
