Abstract:

This paper describes a database on beneficial reuse of foundry by-products that was assembled at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The database was designed to identify (1) materials and markets where methods and specifications exist such that beneficial reuse can begin or be expanded immediately and (2) areas in need of further research. Ninety projects in 14 states and two locations in Canada were evaluated. A broad variety of applications were identified including flowable fills, geotechnical fills, Portland cement concrete and related products, asphalt concrete, Portland cement manufacturing, landfill barrier layers, and agronomic amendments. A technical review was performed of several projects in each reuse area, which consisted of summarizing research activities and actual projects. Whenever possible, specifications and methods were identified and recommendations summarized.
