Abstract:

Milwaukee's high-stakes effort to win its share of the lucrative convention market hinges on its new Midwest Express Center, a 670,000-sq-ft exhibition and convention complex. The facility will include 218,000 sq ft of continuous exhibition space, a 30,000 sq ft ballroom, two upper decks 2,800 sq ft of meeting rooms, kitchen facilities, large prefunction and atrium spaces, and a loading dock area with 16 truck bays. By using design/build, a consortium of engineers, architects and builders was able to make last-minute changes in construction materials that saved money and kept the project within its strict deadline. The same fluid approach should help them meet the deadline for the final phase of the project on time and under budget.
