Abstract:

This book presents the essential elements for the design of final covers for solid waste landfills and abandoned dumps. Chapter 1 gives an overview and presents selected aspects of regulations in the US and Germany, countries where the regulations are the most advanced. Chapter 2 gives detailed information on each of the six individual layers of final cover systems. Chapter 3 contains example cross sections of nine candidate final cover designs. Chapter 4 presents a rational step-by-step procedure of a water balance analysis. Chapter 5 contains analytic details on cover soil slope stability analyses, with worked-out examples. Chapter 6 presents related final cover designs and emerging concepts. Chapter 7 includes additional considerations (quality control, lifetime of materials, post-closure details, etc.) and a summary of the book.
