Abstract:

This proceedings, John F. Kennedy Student Paper Competition and Specialty Seminar Summaries, consists of papers presented at the 27th Congress of the International Association for Hydraulic Research (IAHR) entitled Water for a Changing Global Community. The IAHR Council established this competition in 1992 to honor the memory of Prof. John F. Kennedy who was a prominent educator and researcher within the international hydraulics community. This student paper competition serves to foster involvement of young researchers in hydraulics and fluid mechanics in the activities of the IAHR at an early stage of their careers. Ultimately, twelve papers were selected covering such topics as detection of hairpin vortices; deposition of fine suspended sediment; semi-empirical modeling of sediment transport; thermal regime of the Missouri River; and hot-film shear stress measurements in laminar and turbulent flows. In addition to these selected papers, six specialty seminars were also presented. These seminars discussed such topics as multidirectional waves; modeling of turbulent flow; wind energy; continuing education; hydraulic research management; and hydroinformatics.
