Abstract: In watersheds characterized by high sediment production, culverts must be designed to adequately convey both water and sediment without causing excessive backwater upstream of the culvert or excessive sedimentation within the culvert barrel. This paper presents methods for estimating sediment conveyance capacity and deposition potential in culverts. A design example demonstrating the application of the methods is also presented.
