Abstract:

Despite an urgent need for river and stream restoration design criteria, little guidance has emerged in recent years. Existing guidance is largely unsatisfactory, promoting empiricism and shortcuts that often lead to detrimental designs. This paper addresses pitfalls encountered in a search for a cookbook approach to river and stream restoration design. A general model based upon ecosystem management principles is proposed. Educational and research needs are identified.
