Abstract: Debris basins are widely used in the southwestern areas of the United States, with the majority of the structures located in the Southern California area. More and more development is taking place on alluvial fans and on flood plains located at the outlet of streams from mountainous areas experiencing erosion. This paper reviews methods for estimating debris yield from watersheds and procedures for designing reservoirs to trap the sediment.
