Abstract:

The problem of numerical instability in modeling unsteady open-channel flows is investigated using the technique of numerical experiments. The model is based on the one-dimensional de Saint Venant equations with a four-point nonlinear finite difference implicit scheme. The series of numerical experiments conducted has lead to establishment of a relationship between the spatial interval required for stability and other factors, which include boundary conditions, cross-sectional variation and peak inflow Froude number.
