Probable Maximum Flood Estimation for New and Existing Dams

Abstract:

Although various attempts have been made to streamline the procedures to determine PMF hydrographs for the design of new and rehabilitation of existing dams, there still remains a great deal of subjectivity in the development of an acceptable design value. A heuristic approach is presented in this paper to ascertain the reasonableness and conservatism of deterministically estimated PMF peak by comparing it with empirically estimated values of enveloping peak flows.
