Abstract: Total scour at bridge crossing waterways consists of long-term aggradation or degradation of the streambed, contraction scour and local scour at the piers and abutments. This paper will present practical equations for computing live-bed or clear-water contraction scour. With live-bed conditions, both equations need to be used and the smaller scour depth used.
