Abstract: The knowledge of hydrodynamic forces acting on hydraulic jump stilling basin slabs has been a research topic for the past four decades. Published methodologies for computing the hydrodynamic forces are comparatively analysed as far as their purposes and application domains are concerned. It is shown that available criteria do not always lead to similar results. Some remarks about the use of those methodologies are presented. Guidelines for a research programme on hydrodynamic forces, presently in execution, based on simultaneous pressure measurements in several points of the stilling basin floor, are presented.
