Abstract:

An implicit finite-volume scheme is used to solve the shallow water equations under mountainous flow conditions. The algorithm is stable for sub- and supercritical flows and moving internal boundaries. Recent flood events in the Swiss Alps have shown the importance of morphological processes. A mobile bed module has, therefore, been implemented that accounts for suspended load and bedload. Numerical solutions are presented and compared with exact solutions and measured values. The paper is concluded with a practical application of the model concerning a flood event in an alpine valley and a brief discussion of the results.
