Abstract:

A numerical simulation of the steady flow in the proximity of the delta of the Po river has been carried out. We consider the 2D quasi-hydrostatic model, approximating non conservation form of the shallow water equations by two new different finite element schemes. In the present paper we describe the differences among the two discretizations, focusing the advantages of each of them. Then we present another finite element model solving the conservation form of shallow water equations. Then we introduce the physical problem and the characteristics of the flow we want to simulate. Finally we compare and discuss the numerical results, at the light of the theory underlying the schemes. The present study is intended as a preliminary step towards the study of the real evolution of the unsteady flow as governed by the inflow and the outflow tidal elevation evolving in time.
