Abstract:

Detailed data on settlement predictions and measured values are given for two water tanks and an area of fill constructed on a thick soft clay stratum that showed decreasing preconsolidation characteristics with depth. Piezocone results were used to develop an overconsolidation ratio (OCR) versus depth profile that gave estimated settlement values that were in good agreement with the actual settlement readings. Sensitivity of the predicted settlement to relatively small differences in OCR is demonstrated.
