Compressibility of Clays: Fundamental and Practical Aspects

by Serge Leroueil, Universite Laval, Ste-Foy, Canada,

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Vertical and Horizontal Deformations of Foundations and Embankments

Abstract:

The compressibility of natural clays is influenced by strain rate, temperature, sampling disturbance, stress path and some restructuration factors. The first part of the paper reviews the effects of these factors. In a second part, in-situ conditions are considered. Finally, practical conclusions concerning the evaluation of long term settlements are given.
