Abstract:

Engineering design involves a strong notion of the geometric structure of design artifacts. Research efforts to support the geometric aspects of design have concentrated on the representation and capture of such structure. We argue for a general approach which allows for the support of form conception derived from a symbolic decomposition of the design. We present a framework based on an explicit identification and decoupling of the distinct elements involved in form conception. We discuss each of these elements in detail, and identify the domain dependent and domain independent aspects of the framework.
