Abstract: This paper describes a method to determine the distribution of base pressures under a rectangular footing experiencing partial contact of the footing with soil. Assuming the footing to be rigid and that the distribution of base pressure is linear, governing equations are derived from force equilibrium. The equations are then solved by a special iterative procedure to obtain the base pressure distribution. A computational algorithm is briefly discussed.
