Abstract:

Cast iron columns exist in numerous vintage buildings. Alterations to these buildings often require analysis and modification of the structural system. This paper identifies codes that governed original cast iron construction, as well as listing recommended guide lines for their evaluation and retrofit. The application of these guide lines is then illustrated in a building renovation designed by Thornton-Tomasetti/Engineers.
