Current and Future Research in Steel Bridge Structures

by Karl H. Frank, Univ of Texas a Austin, Austin, United States,

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Structures Congress XII

Abstract:

The topics I have listed are ones which I am aware through discussions with various researches, designers, and industry representatives. The list of topics is presented as a starting point for a discussion of the subject. Certainly, other topics are in need of research. The paper is organized into a series of paragraphs defining the need for research, issues to be addressed in the research, and comments on possible research approaches. The problem areas listed cover a range of topics which will provide information for the design of new more economical and dramatic bridges in the future. Most of the basis of present steel bridge design dates back to research performed from 1950 to 1970. Hopefully, with increased funding for highways, we can embark upon a research program which develops the new knowledge required to design the safe, reliable, and economical steel bridges of the future.
