Optical Scatter From a Space Craft Mirror Due to Microscopic Impacts

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Engineering, Construction, and Operations in Space IV

Abstract:

This article addresses the issue of how micrometeoroid and man made debris in the space environment can adversely change the optical resolution of a mirror. The study used an algorithm that models the small particle environment of space in Earth orbit, whose output is then used to compute Mie scattering. The Hubble telescope was modeled as a test case.
