Abstract:

Postbuckling response prediction of composite panels using Newton's method will be discussed. The traditional approach of nonlinear finite element analysis is to use a Newton-Raphson approach with an arc-length control procedure. An alternate approach based on Newton's method is reviewed which utilizes information gained from a linear stress analysis and a linear bifurcation buckling analysis as a predictor for a solution in the deep postbuckling range. Application of this analysis method to composite panels is presented in this paper. Numerical results for the traditional approach and Newton's method are compared with published experimental results for a composite panel.
