Abstract:

A structural optimization based method was developed to improve the finite element model to achieve good agreement with the test results. The modal displacements at critical locations are treated as displacement constraints in the structural optimization problem. The optimization algorithm calculates the changes required in the cross-sectional areas of the members in order to achieve a finite element model compatible with the model test results. Numerical results are presented for a truss structure with simulated test results.
