The Use of Structural Composites in 21st Century Infrastructure Technology

by Douglas S. Barno, The Composites Inst of the Society, of The Plastics Industry, Inc., Granville, United States,

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Plastics Composites for 21st Century Construction

Abstract:

The purpose of this paper is to create and transmit a sense of the unique benefits which effective application of composites technology can bring to the civil engineering. infrastructure arena. Some of these benefits can include: stronger, more efficient structures which may still employ traditional materials; new combinations of materials whose total performance exceeds the limits of performance of either material(s) by itself; composites which take full advantage of the properties of each constituent material; and the ability to tailor properties that are complimentary to traditional materials is perhaps one of the most appealing benefits of composites.
