Abstract:

Its location at 660 Madison Avenue will put the new home of clothier Barneys New York in the heart of Manhattan's exclusive midtown shopping district, but the $120 million project to renovate the 23-story steel framed, concrete-encased existing building, built in 1958, presented a number of construction challenges. These included the need to carve out a new truck loading dock below the building, protect nearby landmark structures, a subway line and the public, and address the severe logistics involved in operating on a highly congested urban site.
