Abstract:

The paper focusses on the analysis of semi-rigid composite frames, reporting mainly on the results of a research study which combines the experimental and theoretical approaches. Attention is devoted to the effect of joint action on frame performance in both braced and unbraced frames. For braced frames, a `beam line' approach is proposed, enabling engineering optimization of the joint-beam system. The modelling of semi-rigid composite frames is discussed, with reference to available general purpose programs. Results of frame analyses conducted using the joint response data available from tests permits identification of general design requirements for partially restrained frameworks.
