Abstract: We compare an asymptotic kinematic wave solution for movement of debris flows with a solution obtained by the method of characteristics. The differences between the two solutions in the field of applicability of the theory are negligible for wide rectangular channels but increase for narrow channels. The two solutions converge for large elapsed times after debris-flow initiation.
