Flushing flows are high flow releases designed to remove fine sediment accumulated in river gravels downstream of reservoirs. These releases must be designed to maximize transport of sand-sized (and finer) sediment, whilst minimizing transport of gravel, because the supply of gravel to the reach from upstream has been eliminated by the reservoir. The Trinity River in northern California illustrates the sediment problems below reservoirs for which flushing flows may be required.
