Abstract:

A series of flume experiments revealed a possible method of reducing local river bed scour at bridge piers, thereby, reducing the risk of bridge failure. Three prototype schemes were installed on estuarine, tidal influenced and non-tidal rivers in the United Kingdom to verify these laboratory findings. The measurement of real time scour for both protected and unprotected piers at these sites are being undertaken using custom built apparatus. Details of the laboratory results, site installations, instrumentation and initial field results are presented herein.
