Abstract:

This paper describes the use of artificial neural network (ANN) analysis as a computing device for estimating scour at bridge piers. The neural network presented here is based on 515 sets of field data assembled in a recent report (Gao, 1992). The performance of the ANN is compared with the Chinese equations for live bed and clear water pier scour presented in that report and elsewhere in these Proceedings in an article by Carl Nordin.
