Abstract:

Chapter II, the most comprehensive chapter of the Sedimentation Engineering Manual, has aged. The manual prepared by the Task Committee for the Manual on Sedimentation was published by the ASCE in 1975. Much of the contents of the manual is based on papers published prior to the 1970's in the Journal of Hydraulic Engineering (formerly Journal of the Hydraulics Division). Environmental and economic concerns supported by computer technology have provided significant advances during the past two decades in the field of sedimentation engineering. Manual No. 54, including its second chapter, is being updated by the Task Committee to Update ASCE Manual No. 54 to include recent findings by sediment transport investigators while maintaining the style and integrity of the original document. In updating Chapter II particular emphasis is given to Section F (Hydraulic Relations for Alluvial Streams) and Section H (Sediment Discharge Formulas).
