Abstract:

The Lower Yellow River is known for its disastrous floods in the past. After 4 decades without major floodings, rapid economic and population growths along the River have drew concerns about possible devastation of such a misfortune. To minimize losses, a thorough understanding of current flood protection system and its contemporary issues is needed. This paper describes some of the issues as concluded by the author after participating in a workshop and a field investigation along the Lower Yellow River sponsored by NSF and China Association for Science and Technology.
