Abstract:

The computational modeling of large flood plains presents difficulties related to the mathematical approach of the phenomenon and also to the discretization of the area under study. In this paper a two-dimensional model is used in which the watershed is divided into plain and river type cells. The discharge between cells follows known hydraulic laws either of channel flow or flow over broad crested weir. The main parameters are the discharge coefficients and the numerical solution is based on the double sweep method. The model is applied to a portion of the Pantanal of Mato Grosso, which is an area of great environmental importance of Brazil.
