Abstract:

All unit hydrograph estimation procedures based on orthogonal functions are reviewed in this paper. A more physically based orthogonal function (a gamma function) for unit hydrograph estimation is introduced. A search and a matrix procedures for the direct estimation of a unique hydrograph for a watershed using orthogonal functions is developed here. A comparative analysis of the foregoing unit hydrograph estimation procedure is made using two different watersheds. This analysis shows that the gamma orthogonalized function gives very acceptable results and that there is an important improvement by using the search and the matrix procedures introduced here.
