by Piet Hoekstra, Utrecht Univ, Utrecht, Netherlands,

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Deltas of the World

Abstract:

Monsoonal rivers on Java are responsible for the rapid growth and development of river deltas along the north coast of the island. The climatic and local environmental conditions in these delta result in a range of problems with concern to water quality and quantity, the excessive supply and deposition of sediment and the present land use. Measures already taken to improve the development opportunities of the deltas include methods to control the sediment load of the rivers. By introducing river training works inside the deltas and by increasing the degrees of planning in an early stage, a further improvement of the local conditions is expected.
