Abstract: The aim of this article is to describe the background for and planning of the nearshore areas along the Danish North Sea coast, especially on the basis of the high recreational value of the areas. A description will be made of the funds which have recreational value of the areas. A description will be made of the funds which have been used to protect and at the same time utilize the coastal areas during the past centuries and the new Danish strategy for coastal zone management will be outlined.
