Abstract:

The exploration of the Black Sea coast by Russian hydrographers began in the early 19th century. Hydrographic expeditions of Budishev (1802) and Zarudny (80-ties of the 19th century) provided the first descriptions of various Black Sea coast sections, and presented detailed data on the northern shoreline configuration, water depth and bottom soil. At the end of 19th century port construction began which stimulated the coastal research. Construction engineers were the first to raise an issue of comprehensive study of coastal morphology dynamics (Pastakov, 1919).
